About this website
Element is a secure open-source messaging and collaboration platform built on the Matrix decentralized communication protocol. Developed by Element (co-founded by Matthew Hodgson and Amandine Le Pape in 2017), Element serves as the flagship Matrix client and is used by the French government (5 million government employees), the German military (Bundeswehr), and Mozilla. Key features include: Matrix protocol integration (using the open, federated Matrix protocol for decentralized real-time communication without a central authority), end-to-end encryption (using Olm and Megolm cryptographic protocols with cross-signing and QR code verification), instant messaging (one-to-one and group text with read receipts, typing indicators, reactions, threaded replies, and message editing), voice and video calls (1:1 and group via WebRTC with end-to-end encryption and Jitsi integration), file sharing (with automatic thumbnails and end-to-end encryption), spaces (organizing related rooms for team and project organization, similar to Slack workspaces or Discord servers), room moderation (administrators and moderators with configurable power levels, ban lists, and Mjolnir moderation bot), SSO and identity integration (SAML, OIDC, and CAS for enterprise authentication), integrations and bridges (connecting to IRC, Slack, Discord, Telegram, WhatsApp, Signal via Matrix bridges), notifications (configurable rules for mentions, keywords, and room-specific alerts), search (full-text search across message history), and progressive web app and mobile apps (iOS and Android via React Native).
