FreeCAD is a free and open-source parametric 3D modeling application designed for engineers, architects, product designers, hobbyists, and anyone who needs to create precise 3D models of real-world objects. Unlike traditional direct modeling tools, FreeCAD employs a parametric modeling workflow, meaning every object is built from a series of operations recorded in a history tree. Users can go back at any point, modify parameters such as dimensions, angles, or constraints, and the entire model automatically updates to reflect those changes. This makes it ideal for iterative design processes where dimensions need frequent adjustments or for creating families of parts with similar geometries. FreeCAD’s core functionality revolves around the Sketcher workbench, which provides a fully constrained 2D sketching environment. Users draw shapes (lines, rectangles, arcs, splines) and apply geometric constraints (parallelism, tangency, equality, etc.) and dimensional constraints (length, radius, angle). Once a sketch is fully constrained, it can be used as a base for 3D operations such as Pad (extrude), Pocket (cut), Revolve, Loft, Sweep, and more. This workflow mirrors professional parametric CAD systems like SolidWorks or CATIA, but without the licensing costs. Beyond simple parts, FreeCAD supports assemblies via the Assembly workbench, allowing multiple components to be combined with constraints (e.g., concentric, coincident, offset) to simulate real-world relationships. Parts can also be arranged in a hierarchy, enabling the design of complex machines, furniture, or mechanical systems.
