About this website

Godot Engine is a free and open source game development platform for creating 2D, 3D, and extended reality games across desktop, mobile, web, and console platforms. Originally created in 2007 by Juan Linietsky and Ariel Manzur, the project is now managed by the Godot Foundation and has grown into one of the most popular open source game engines, with the latest version 4.7 released in June 2026. Godot's architecture is built around an innovative node and scene system where game elements are composed hierarchically, enabling rapid prototyping and modular design without the boilerplate required by traditional entity-component systems. The engine includes a dedicated 2D rendering pipeline that operates in true pixel coordinates rather than projected 3D space, making it ideal for pixel art, tile-based, and side-scrolling games. The 3D capabilities include physically based rendering, global illumination, dynamic lighting, shadows, post-processing effects, and a visual shader editor. Godot supports multiple programming languages including its Python-like GDScript, C-sharp with full .NET support, C-plus-plus through the GDExtension interface, and community-maintained bindings for Rust, Python, Kotlin, and Lua. The built-in code editor features autocomplete, refactoring tools, and live debugging. XR support includes OpenXR and WebXR for virtual and augmented reality development. Games can be exported to Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, web browsers, and major game consoles through third-party publishing partners. The engine is released under the MIT license with no runtime royalties or revenue sharing, and is supported by sponsors including Scorewarrior, W4 Games, JetBrains, Mega Crit, and Arm. Notable games built with Godot include Buckshot Roulette by Mike Klubnika.
