About this website
Haiku is a free and open-source operating system inspired by BeOS, focused on personal computing, responsiveness, and simplicity. Originating from the BeOS-compatible OpenBeOS project started in 2001 and renamed Haiku in 2004, it aims to recreate the BeOS experience while being binary-compatible with BeOS R5 applications. Key features: modular microkernel-inspired design with preemptive multitasking, multithreading, and protected memory for high responsiveness. BFS (Be File System) with 64-bit journaling, attributes, indexing, and live queries enabling fast file searches and metadata-rich file management. App Server graphics system with vector-based drawing, anti-aliasing, translucency, and per-window multithreading for smooth UI without blocking. Integrated translation kit for reading and writing image, audio, and text formats via a plugin architecture. Comprehensive C++ API with clean, object-oriented application framework (Be API) for rapid native application development. Package management with HaikuDepot for installing applications with dependency resolution and easy updates. Network stack based on FreeBSD networking code with WiFi support. WebPositive browser based on WebKit. Styled text editing built into the operating system. Locale kit for internationalization and localization. Terminal with bash shell and Unix compatibility via POSIX layer. Runs on x86 and x86_64 architectures, with ARM port in progress. Lightweight system requirements (minimum 512MB RAM) enabling fast boot in under 10 seconds. Used by enthusiasts and developers who appreciate its focus on speed and elegant design.
