ImageMagick is a free, open-source software suite for displaying, converting, and editing raster and vector image files. Created by John Cristy in 1987 and maintained by ImageMagick Studio LLC, it has over 13,000 stars as of 2026. ImageMagick reads and writes over 200 image formats including JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, WebP, HEIF, AVIF, SVG, PDF, PSD, EXR, DPX, and RAW camera formats. The suite includes: magick/convert (main conversion tool), mogrify (batch processing), identify (metadata reading), composite (image overlay), montage (contact sheets), compare (image comparison), and stream (pixel streaming). Processing capabilities include: geometric transforms (resize, crop, rotate, distort), color adjustments (brightness, contrast, gamma, level, hue, saturation), composition (over, multiply, screen, blend), effects (blur, sharpen, emboss, edge detect, vignette, sepia, solarize), text rendering with custom fonts, drawing primitives (line, rectangle, circle, bezier, path), alpha channel operations, ICC color management, multi-page and animated GIF handling, and distributed pixel cache for clusters.
