Khroma

Khroma applies artificial intelligence to help designers discover and save personalized color palettes. When first visiting the site, users train the algorithm by selecting 50 colors they like from a grid of options. The AI then uses these preferences to generate an infinite stream of color combinations tailored to the user taste. The generated palettes appear as pairs, trios, or quads of colors, with each combination rated by the AI for aesthetic harmony. Users can save favorite combinations to a personal library, which persists in browser local storage. The tool provides multiple viewing modes: a grid view shows many palettes at once, a detail view displays one palette large with typography previews, and a compare view places two palettes side by side for evaluation. Each color in a palette links to a detail page showing the hex value, RGB values, HSL values, and the color name in the X11 color naming system. Khroma also suggests fonts that pair well with the selected palette, pulling from Google Fonts. The AI is trained on a dataset of professionally designed color schemes from design portfolios, award-winning websites, and color theory literature. The more a user interacts with the tool—saving palettes, dismissing ones they dislike—the better the recommendations become. Khroma was created by George Hastings, a designer and developer interested in the intersection of machine learning and creative tools. The tool runs in the browser and uses a pre-trained model, so it works without constant server communication after the initial load.
