Metabase Business Intelligence

Metabase is an open-source business intelligence and analytics platform that lets anyone in an organization explore data, build dashboards, and answer business questions through a visual query builder or natural language without writing SQL. The platform connects to databases including PostgreSQL, MySQL, BigQuery, Redshift, Snowflake, MongoDB, Athena, ClickHouse, and SQLite, automatically introspecting the schema to present tables and fields in a searchable interface. The visual query builder lets non-technical users filter, summarize, and join data through a point-and-click interface, while the native SQL editor with autocomplete and results preview serves power users who need full query control. A natural language feature lets users type questions in plain English and receives answers as charts or tables, with the system translating the query into SQL against the connected database using the semantic model. Dashboards assemble multiple visualizations including line charts, bar charts, scatter plots, maps, funnels, and tables, with filter widgets that let viewers dynamically adjust the displayed data by date range, category, or text match. The data model editor defines metric definitions, column types, foreign key relationships, and custom columns that translate raw database fields into business-friendly dimensions, ensuring consistent calculations across all questions and dashboards. Permissions control access at the database, table, and row level through group-based policies, enabling multi-tenant deployments where different teams see different subsets of data. Embedding features let product teams embed individual charts or full dashboards in external applications through signed JWT-authenticated iframes. The platform can be self-hosted as a Docker container or deployed through managed cloud hosting, with over ninety thousand organizations using it including Hugging Face, McDonald's, Capital One, and Linear.
