About this website
MUI, formerly Material UI, is a comprehensive React component library suite headquartered in Paris, France. The flagship product implements the Material Design specification with over 5.8 million weekly npm downloads, 93,900 GitHub stars, and 3,000 contributing developers. Version 9, the latest major release, introduces structural changes to the component architecture and removes legacy APIs. The product suite spans three libraries. Material UI delivers prebuilt components following the Material Design guidelines, including buttons, cards, dialogs, menus, data tables, auto-complete inputs, date pickers, and navigation drawers. Base UI provides unstyled headless components with hooks and controlled state management for teams implementing custom design systems without opinionated styling. MUI X adds advanced components: the Data Grid handles up to one million rows with virtualization, sorting, filtering, column pinning, and Excel export; Date and Time Pickers support 25 locales; Charts render bar, line, scatter, pie, and sparkline visualizations; Tree Views support lazy loading and selection. Every component implements ARIA roles, keyboard navigation, and focus trapping. The theming system uses the sx prop for inline style overrides, nested theme providers for contextual overrides, and dynamic color manipulation through the internal color manipulation module. The documentation contains interactive examples for every component and prop. Spotify, Amazon, NASA, Netflix, Unity, Shutterstock, Docker, and Loggi deploy production interfaces built on the library. The MUI Store sells premium templates. Released under the MIT license.
