About this website

MuPDF is a free and open-source lightweight PDF, XPS, and e-book rendering toolkit that provides high-quality viewing, parsing, and rendering of document formats with minimal resource usage. Developed by Artifex Software, Inc. (headquartered in San Rafael, California, also the developers of Ghostscript) with primary developers Tor Andersson and Sebastian Rasmussen, MuPDF was first released in 2006 as a modern, faster alternative to Ghostscript's PDF rendering capabilities. Key features: format support: renders PDF 1.7 (including PDF 2.0), XPS (OpenXPS and Microsoft XPS), EPUB, CBZ (comic book ZIP), CBR (comic book RAR), FB2 (FictionBook), and image formats (PNG, JPEG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, PNM, JXR/JPEG XR, JPEG 2000, PGF, SVG). Rendering engine: high-quality anti-aliased rendering with sub-pixel accuracy, ICC color management, transparency (alpha blending), gradients, and shading patterns. C library (libmupdf): a modular C library providing APIs for document loading, page rendering, text extraction, annotation editing, form filling, and PDF manipulation. The library is designed for minimal memory footprint and fast rendering, making it ideal for embedded systems, mobile devices, and resource-constrained environments. Java bindings: MuPDF provides Java bindings for Android development, used in many Android PDF reader apps. Command-line tools: mutool command-line utility with subcommands: mutool draw (render pages to images), mutool convert (convert between formats), mutool clean (optimize PDFs), mutool merge (merge PDFs), mutool extract (extract images and fonts), and mutool run (run JavaScript scripts for PDF manipulation). Annotation and form support. Text search: full-text search within documents. JBIG2 and JPEG2000 decoding. Font subsetting. AGPL-3.0 (commercial license available).
