About this website
Rancher is a free and open-source container management platform that provides a complete solution for running Kubernetes in production. Originally created by Rancher Labs (founded by Sheng Liang and Shannon Williams in 2014, headquartered in Cupertino, California, acquired by SUSE in 2020), Rancher enables organizations to deploy and manage Kubernetes clusters across any infrastructure (on-premises, cloud, edge) from a single centralized platform. Key features: multi-cluster management: Rancher can manage Kubernetes clusters running on any provider, including Amazon EKS, Google GKE, Azure AKS, RKE (Rancher Kubernetes Engine), RKE2, K3s, and imported existing clusters. The Rancher dashboard provides a unified view of all clusters, their nodes, workloads, and resources. Cluster provisioning: Rancher can provision new Kubernetes clusters on cloud providers (AWS, Azure, GCP), on bare metal (via RKE/RKE2), or on edge devices (via K3s). Node pools manage auto-scaling of worker nodes. Rancher handles certificate management, etcd backups, and Kubernetes version upgrades. RBAC and authentication: Rancher centralizes authentication and role-based access control across all managed clusters. Supports Active Directory, LDAP, SAML, GitHub, Azure AD, Google, and local authentication. Global roles, cluster roles, and project/namespace roles provide fine-grained access control. Projects: logical grouping of namespaces with shared access control and resource quotas. Catalogs and Apps: deploy Helm charts and Rancher Apps from built-in or custom catalogs. Monitoring and alerting: built-in Prometheus, Grafana, and Alertmanager integration for cluster and workload monitoring. Logging: centralized logging via Fluentd/Fluent Bit to Elasticsearch, Splunk, Kafka, or other backends. CI/CD: Fleet for GitOps-based continuous delivery to multiple clusters. Backup and restore. Service mesh: Istio integration. Go. Apache-2.0.
