About this website

Obsidian is a powerful knowledge management and note-taking application developed by Erica Xu and Shida Li, first released in 2020, that stores notes as plain Markdown files in a local folder on the user's device, enabling complete ownership and portability of personal knowledge while providing rich linking, graph visualization, and extensibility through a thriving plugin ecosystem that transforms interconnected notes into a personal knowledge base or second brain. The bidirectional linking feature automatically creates connections between notes through wiki-style bracket links, building a network of interconnected ideas that reveals relationships and patterns through an interactive graph view displaying all notes as nodes with links as edges, enabling visual navigation through concept clusters and identification of orphaned or hub notes. The local-first storage stores all content as plain text Markdown files that can be opened and edited with any text editor, synced through any cloud service, version-controlled with Git, and permanently accessible without depending on a proprietary cloud service, ensuring data longevity and privacy. The plugin ecosystem includes over two thousand community plugins extending functionality with features like Kanban boards, spaced repetition flashcards, Excalidraw drawing, Dataview queries, calendar views, mind maps, and integration with task managers, reference managers, and AI assistants. The canvas feature provides an infinite spatial workspace for arranging notes, images, PDFs, and multimedia on a visual board. The daily notes feature creates timestamped entries for journaling. The vault synchronization through Obsidian Sync offers end-to-end encrypted cross-device sync. Designed for knowledge workers, researchers, writers, students, and productivity enthusiasts.
