About this website

The Open VSX Registry is a vendor-neutral, open-source extension registry for VS Code-compatible editors, operated by the Eclipse Foundation as an alternative to the proprietary Microsoft Visual Studio Code Marketplace. The registry hosts over 14,843 extensions and serves millions of downloads per month, providing developers with a fully open platform for publishing and discovering extensions that work with any editor implementing the VS Code extension API including VSCodium, Gitpod, Eclipse Theia, OpenSumi, Coder, and Code OSS. The registry accepts extensions targeting programming languages, themes, debuggers, linters, formatters, snippets, and AI coding assistants. Popular extensions include Claude Code by Anthropic with 26 million installs, Language Support for Java by Red Hat with 34 million installs, PHP tools by DevSense with 32 million installs, rust-analyzer by the LLVM project, Ruby LSP by Shopify, clangd by the LLVM project, and Codex by OpenAI. The platform implements rate limiting tiers to ensure reliable access as usage increases, with separate limits for anonymous access, authenticated access, and enterprise access. Publishing extensions requires an Eclipse Foundation account and uses the standard vsce command-line tool with a custom registry flag. The API is fully documented and supports querying extension metadata, version history, file downloads, and search by name, tag, or category. The server-side implementation is open source under the Eclipse Public License, hosted on GitHub under the EclipseFdn organization, and deployed on Microsoft Azure with Cloudflare as the CDN. The registry is funded by Eclipse Foundation members including Google, IBM, Microsoft, and SAP.
