About this website

PassMark Software operates this website as a dedicated platform for comparing hard drive performance through publicly submitted benchmark results. The site aggregates over one million system test records and maintains a database of more than 15,000 distinct hard drive models, updating charts on a daily basis. PerformanceTest, a software utility developed by PassMark, allows users to run standardized disk speed tests on their own systems, and these results are voluntarily uploaded to the central database. The website then processes these millions of data points to generate four primary comparison charts: one based on overall hard drive performance (using a composite disk score from the PerformanceTest suite), one for sequential read speed, one for sequential write speed, and one for random seek time. Each chart ranks drives by model and capacity, filtering by factors such as interface type (SATA, SAS, NVMe), form factor (2.5-inch, 3.5-inch, M.2), and storage class (HDD, SSD, hybrid). Users can narrow results by manufacturer, selecting from major brands like Seagate, Western Digital, Samsung, Crucial, Toshiba, Kingston, Micron, Intel, and many others. The interface also provides a search box to locate a specific model number or capacity range. For each drive, the charts display the average benchmark score, sample size (how many user submissions were used), standard deviation, and a performance histogram showing the distribution of scores. This allows visitors to assess not only the typical performance but also the consistency among different samples.
