About this website
Phaser is an open-source HTML5 game framework for creating 2D browser games using JavaScript, TypeScript, and WebGL. Designed to be fast, free, and fun, it provides a comprehensive suite of game development features including physics engines (Arcade Physics, Matter.js), sprite and animation management, input handling for keyboard, mouse, touch, and gamepad, tilemap rendering, audio systems with Web Audio API support, particle effects, and camera controls. The framework supports both Canvas and WebGL rendering backends with automatic fallback, enabling games to run smoothly across desktop and mobile browsers without plugins. Phaser 3, the current major version, introduced a completely rewritten rendering engine capable of handling thousands of sprites at 60fps, a modular scene management system, and an ECS-like (Entity Component System) architecture for better code organization. The framework also includes built-in support for loading and playing spine animations, bitmap fonts, texture atlases, and JSON data, along with input plugins for virtual joysticks and buttons for mobile game controls. With over 37,000 GitHub stars, Phaser has one of the largest and most active communities in the HTML5 game development space, supported by extensive documentation, hundreds of examples, and a thriving ecosystem of plugins and tools. The framework has been used to create thousands of published games across genres including platformers, puzzles, RPGs, arcade games, and educational applications, and is particularly popular for casual web games, interactive advertising, and educational content. Phaser is developed by Richard Davey (Photon Storm) and is available under the MIT License.
