About this website

ShareDrop is a browser-based peer-to-peer file sharing application that leverages HTML5 WebRTC technology to transfer files directly between devices without any intermediate server storage. Unlike traditional cloud-based file sharing services, ShareDrop does not upload your files to a remote server; instead, it establishes a direct real-time connection between the sender and receiver using WebRTC’s data channel capabilities. This ensures that files remain private and are never stored on any third-party infrastructure. To use ShareDrop, a user simply opens the website in a modern browser (desktop or mobile) and drags and drops files into the interface. The application then generates a unique, temporary room or session link that can be shared with the intended recipient via any communication channel such as email, instant messaging, or social media. The recipient clicks the link, which opens their own browser instance, and the two browsers negotiate a direct peer-to-peer connection. If both parties are on the same local network, the transfer often happens over LAN speed; if they are on different networks, the connection uses STUN/TURN servers only for NAT traversal, not for data relay. ShareDrop supports sending multiple files simultaneously, including folders (preserving directory structure), and handles large files without the file size limits typical of email attachments or many free cloud services. The interface is intentionally minimal: a large drop zone, a file list with progress bars per file, and a status indicator showing the number of connected peers. There is no account registration, no file expiration timers, and no limit on the number of transfers. Once the receiver accepts the incoming files, the transfer begins immediately, and both sides can see real-time
