Squoosh

Squoosh is a browser-based image compression tool developed by Google Chrome Labs that performs all image processing locally on the user’s device. It allows users to reduce the file size of images without uploading them to any external server, ensuring complete privacy and security. The tool supports a wide range of input image formats, including PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF, and even raw files. When an image is dropped or pasted into the interface, Squoosh immediately displays two side-by-side previews: the original version and the compressed version. Users can inspect the visual differences pixel by pixel using a slider or a side-by-side comparison mode. A histogram overlay shows color and luminance distribution changes, helping users assess quality loss. Squoosh offers multiple codec options for compression. For JPEG, it provides MozJPEG (a trous-based encoder optimized for quality) and standard JPEG. For PNG, it supports OptiPNG and Pngquant, which reduce file size by removing unnecessary metadata and reducing color depth. WebP compression is available in both lossy and lossless modes, with adjustable quality sliders for the lossy variant. AVIF compression is also supported, using the latest AV1 codec to achieve high compression ratios with minimal quality degradation. Additionally, there is a “resize” option that allows users to scale dimensions down by percentage or absolute pixel values, further reducing file size. Advanced controls include chroma subsampling, dithering, and metadata removal (Exif, sRGB, etc.). A key feature is the ability to compare different codecs and settings simultaneously.
