About this website
Synfig Studio is a free and open-source 2D vector animation software designed for creating film-quality animations using vector and bitmap artwork. Originally developed by Robert Quattlebaum (Darco) in 2003 as a proprietary tool for his company Voria Studios, it was released as open source in 2005. Key features: vector tweening (interpolation) that automatically generates intermediate frames between keyframes, eliminating the need for manual frame-by-frame animation. Layers system compositing shapes, gradients, images, text, and distortions using over 50 layer types including geometric shapes, blur, distortion (spherize, warp, noise), color correction, and transformations. Bones system (skeleton deformation) for character rigging, allowing skeletal animation where manipulating bones deforms attached artwork. Skeleton layer with bone weights and inverse kinematics. Advanced timeline with keyframe interpolation modes including TCB ( tension, continuity, bias), ease in/out, linear, and clamped, with graph editors for fine-tuning motion curves. Parameters that can be animated include position, rotation, scale, color, opacity, blur radius, and any other animatable property. Width point and dash items for variable stroke width along paths. Sound layer for lip-sync and audio-driven animation. Particle system. Gradient layers including linear, radial, conical, spiral, and noise. Polygon, star, and curve drawing tools. Looping animations with cyclic link. Bone influence radius. Time loop and recursion. Export to various formats including MPEG, Theora, AVI, GIF, APNG, and image sequences via FFmpeg integration. Python scripting for automation. Cross-platform on Windows, macOS (Intel and Apple Silicon), and Linux. Open source under GPL-3.0. Used by independent animators and educational institutions.
