About this website
VeraCrypt is a free and open-source disk encryption software that provides on-the-fly encryption for files, partitions, and entire storage devices. Forked from the discontinued TrueCrypt project in 2013 by Mounir Idrassi (IDRIX), VeraCrypt addresses security vulnerabilities found in the TrueCrypt audit and enhances encryption strength with higher iteration counts. Key features include: on-the-fly encryption (data is automatically encrypted and decrypted in real-time as it is read from or written to storage, requiring no user intervention after initial setup), file containers (create virtual encrypted disks stored as files that can be mounted as real drives, indistinguishable from random data when unmounted), partition and device encryption (encrypt entire non-system partitions, external USB drives, and system partitions with pre-boot authentication), hidden volumes (plausible deniability through a hidden encrypted volume nested inside an outer encrypted volume, with no way to prove the hidden volume exists), system encryption (full system drive encryption with pre-boot authentication requiring password or keyfile before the operating system boots), encryption algorithms (AES-256, Serpent, Twofish, and cascaded combinations of all three for layered protection), keyfiles (use arbitrary files as additional authentication factors alongside passwords), hardware acceleration (AES-NI instructions and hardware-accelerated cryptographic operations), and cross-platform (Windows, macOS, and Linux).
