About this website
Xata is a serverless PostgreSQL platform built for agentic workloads, enabling engineering teams to create instant database clones with production-like data for every AI agent run, continuous integration pipeline, and development workflow. Now fully open source with over 11,800 GitHub stars, the platform uses copy-on-write storage technology to clone any Postgres database in under one second regardless of size, storing only the differences between branches rather than duplicating full datasets. This approach reduces infrastructure costs dramatically, as demonstrated by a real-world scenario where 100 daily pull requests against a one-terabyte database require only five compute hours and four terabytes of storage with Xata, compared to 2,400 compute hours and 100 terabytes with traditional database provisioning. Branches scale to zero when idle, consuming no compute resources, and wake with subsecond cold starts on first query. Built-in PII detection and anonymization ensure that cloned databases start clean without exposing sensitive production data. The platform runs 100 percent upstream PostgreSQL version 18 with support for all standard extensions including pg_duckdb, with read replicas, point-in-time recovery, and NVMe-backed premium storage. Xata connects to existing databases on AWS RDS, Aurora, Google Cloud SQL, and self-hosted infrastructure without migration, or can host the primary database directly. Bring Your Own Cloud deployment allows the data plane to run in the customer AWS or GCP account. Customers include Clade, Numeric, Academia, Checkfront, David AI, and SaaSgrid. Jordan Tigani, CEO of MotherDuck, endorses the platform.
