Bashtop

Bashtop is a resource monitor that shows usage and stats for processor, memory, disks, network, and processes, written entirely in Bash by aristocratos. With over 10,000 stars as of 2026, bashtop was the predecessor to btop (the C++ rewrite by the same author), offering a feature-rich system monitor that runs purely in the shell without requiring compiled binaries. Bashtop displays a clean, colorful, and responsive interface with real-time updates. Key features include: CPU usage per core with frequency and temperature display, memory usage with detailed breakdown (used, cached, buffers, and available), disk I/O read and write speeds per device with activity graphs, network activity with per-interface upload and download rates and total transfer, process list with PID, user, CPU usage, memory usage, and command, sortable process table (sorting by any column in ascending or descending order), process filtering by name, process tree view showing parent-child relationships, signal sending to processes (TERM, KILL, INT, HUP with selectable targets), mouse support (clicking to select processes and menu items), customizable themes and color schemes, signal-aware bar graphs and line charts, automatic detection of available sensors, and configurable update intervals. While bashtop has been superseded by btop+ (the C++ rewrite with better performance and more features), it remains useful on systems where compiled binaries are unavailable.
