GTmetrix is a web-based tool that analyzes and monitors website performance by simulating page loads in a controlled browser environment. It uses Google’s Lighthouse engine to generate performance scores and provides a detailed breakdown of metrics such as Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), Total Blocking Time (TBT), Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS), Time to First Byte (TTFB), and Fully Loaded Time. These metrics are aligned with Core Web Vitals, helping site owners understand how their pages perform from a user experience standpoint. The tool offers two main testing modes. A free quick test allows users to enter any URL, select a test location (e.g., Seattle, WA, USA; London, UK; Sydney, Australia), a browser (Chrome or Firefox), and a connection speed (e.g., throttled 3G, 4G, or unthrottled). After running the test, GTmetrix generates a waterfall chart that shows every resource loaded on the page, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, fonts, and third-party scripts, along with their load times, sizes, and order. This helps identify bottlenecks like render-blocking resources, oversized images, or slow server responses. Beyond individual tests, GTmetrix provides a monitoring feature that runs periodic tests (every 5, 15, 30, or 60 minutes depending on the plan) and tracks performance changes over time.
