IBM Instana is an automated application performance monitoring (APM) and observability platform that provides real-time, full-stack visibility into cloud-native, microservices, and serverless applications. Acquired by IBM in late 2020 to strengthen its hybrid cloud observability portfolio, Instana differentiates itself through its fully automated approach: its lightweight Instana AutoTrace agents automatically discover application components, services, endpoints, and dependencies without manual configuration, continuously adapting to infrastructure changes in real-time. The platform captures 100 percent of application requests with sub-second latency, providing detailed distributed traces with call stack analysis, database query breakdowns, and inter-service dependency maps. Instana supports over 250 technologies out of the box including Java, Node.js, Python, Go, .NET, Ruby, PHP, Kubernetes, Docker, AWS Lambda, Google Cloud Functions, Azure Functions, and message queues like Apache Kafka and RabbitMQ. The platform provides Golden Signal dashboards (latency, traffic, errors, saturation) at both infrastructure and application levels, AI-driven anomaly detection that automatically identifies performance regressions, and Smart Alerts that correlate related events to reduce alert noise. Built on OpenTelemetry standards, Instana enables organizations to export telemetry data to other tools while maintaining vendor-neutral instrumentation. The platform also includes website monitoring for real-user experience tracking, synthetic monitoring for proactive endpoint testing, and mobile monitoring for iOS and Android applications. IBM offers Instana as a fully managed SaaS service with per-host or per-container pricing models.
