About this website

The Meat Industry Association of New Zealand, abbreviated MIA, is the trade organization representing the companies that process and export New Zealand red meat including beef, lamb, and mutton. Headquartered in Wellington, the association represents over five thousand member companies including the major meat processors like Silver Fern Farms, ANZCO Foods, Alliance Group, and Greenlea Premier Meats, along with smaller processors, exporters, and industry service providers. New Zealand is the world's largest exporter of lamb meat and a major beef exporter, with annual red meat exports valued at approximately ten billion New Zealand dollars, making meat one of New Zealand's most important export sectors after dairy. MIA advocates on behalf of the meat processing and exporting sector on policy issues including tariff rates in key export markets like China, the United States, the European Union, and Japan, food safety standards and Maximum Residue Limits, livestock traceability regulations under the National Animal Identification and Tracing scheme, animal welfare codes of practice, and climate policy including agricultural emissions pricing.
