About this website

Meilisearch is a fast, open-source search engine that provides instant search results with typo tolerance and relevance tuning. Developed by Meilisearch SAS (a French company founded in 2018 by Quentin de Quelen and Clémentine Urkicz), it has over 49,000 stars as of 2026. Meilisearch is designed to be significantly easier to set up and use than Elasticsearch or Algolia alternatives, while delivering sub-50ms search performance even on large datasets. Written in Rust for memory safety and performance, Meilisearch can process and search millions of records on a single server. Key features include: typo-tolerant search using Levenshtein distance with configurable tolerance levels (up to 2 edits), prefix search (matching partial words as users type), instant search API returning results in under 50ms for an excellent user experience, multi-language support with built-in tokenizers for Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Latin, and other languages, customizable search ranking with ranking rules (words, typo, proximity, attribute, sort, exactness) that can be reordered or disabled, filterable and sortable attributes, faceted search (for category filtering, price ranges, and aggregations), custom stop words and synonyms, searchable attributes configuration (controlling which fields are indexed), distinct attribute (returning only one document per unique attribute value), pagination with configurable limits, geo search (filtering and sorting by geographic coordinates using GeoPoint), document-level security through tenant tokens, highlighted search results (returning formatted strings with match markers), asynchronous index updates (task-based API with progress tracking), snapshot and dump functionality for backup and migration, and RESTful API with official SDKs for JavaScript, Python, Ruby, Go, Rust, PHP, Swift, Java, Dart, and .NET.
