About this website
The Motor Trade Association of New Zealand, abbreviated MTA, is the national industry organization representing automotive businesses across New Zealand, founded in 1917 and headquartered in Wellington. The association represents over three thousand member businesses across the automotive services sector including vehicle repair workshops, automotive electrical specialists, petrol service stations, vehicle dismantlers and parts recyclers, tire dealers, and motor vehicle dealers selling new and used cars. New Zealand has one of the highest rates of vehicle ownership per capita in the developed world, with over four million registered vehicles for a population of approximately five million people, making the automotive service and repair industry a significant sector of the national economy. MTA provides member services including technical training and certification for automotive technicians, a national technician skills competition, dispute resolution services for consumer complaints against member businesses, advocacy on government policy including the Clean Car Standard emissions regulations, vehicle safety inspection requirements under the Warrant of Fitness system, and fair trading regulations for used vehicle sales.
