About this website
PlantUML is an open-source tool that allows users to create diagrams from a plain text language, enabling version control and collaborative editing of visual documentation. Created by Arnaud Roques in 2009, it has become one of the most popular text-to-diagram tools with integrations in virtually every major documentation and wiki platform. Key features: text-based diagram description using an intuitive syntax that generates professional diagrams without manual drawing, enabling diagrams to be stored in version control systems alongside code. Wide range of diagram types including sequence diagrams, use case diagrams, class diagrams, activity diagrams, component diagrams, state diagrams, object diagrams, deployment diagrams, and timing diagrams. Additional non-UML diagram types including architecture diagrams, mind maps, wireframes (Salt), Gantt charts, WBS (Work Breakdown Structure), JSON and YAML data rendering, network diagrams, and entity-relationship diagrams. Java-based engine runnable on any platform with Java, with Docker images and web server integration options. Extensive IDE and editor integration including VS Code, IntelliJ IDEA, Eclipse, Atom, Sublime Text, Vim, Emacs, and Notepad++ plugins for live preview and editing. Documentation platform integration with Confluence, Jira, GitHub (via Markdown code blocks), GitLab, Notion, Obsidian, MediaWiki, and DokuWiki. Themes and skin customization for styling diagrams with custom colors, fonts, and layouts. Sprite and icon support including integration with open-iconic and other icon sets. Server component for rendering diagrams via HTTP API and web interface. Extensibility through preprocessor directives and custom libraries. Open source under GPL.
