About this website
YugabyteDB is an open source distributed SQL database that combines PostgreSQL compatibility with the horizontal scalability and fault tolerance of Google Spanner. Founded in 2016 by former Facebook engineers Kannan Muthukkaruppan and Karthik Ranganathan and incubated at Y Combinator, the company has raised 291 million dollars in total funding at a 1.3 billion dollar valuation. The database supports full PostgreSQL wire protocol compatibility including stored procedures, triggers, JSON, and extensions like PostGIS and pgvector, allowing existing PostgreSQL applications to migrate with minimal code changes. Distributed ACID transactions are enabled through a Raft consensus based replication layer that provides strong consistency across geo distributed clusters with automatic sharding and rebalancing. Key capabilities include read replicas for low latency global reads, point in time recovery with continuous backup, change data capture for streaming to Kafka and Debezium, xCluster asynchronous replication for multi region active active deployments, and smart driver load balancing that routes queries to the nearest healthy node. The YugabyteDB Managed cloud service offers fully managed clusters on AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure with one click deployments. Notable customers include Flagstar Bank, Hudson River Trading, Plume, Narvar, and Canva, who use it for financial transaction processing, real time inventory management, and globally distributed user data serving.
